Hayate 2-1

Summary: Hayate finally reawakens in the splendor of the Sanzenin manor, believing wholeheartedly he has been sent to Heaven. He decides to take advantage of the situation, only to encounter Maria in an unforeseen turn of events and have all of his wounds reopen suddenly, rendering him unconscious once again. Her attempts to smooth things out a bit are interrupted by Hayate’s immediate acceptance of Nagi’s offer of the position as her butler, and things only become more confused from there.

Hayate 2-2

Maria approaches Klaus, the majordomo at the household, to see whether he approves of Hayate taking the job. He is not convinced, yet Hayate is eager to prove his worth to win the trust of Nagi and the others. While he is cleaning, he stumbles upon Nagi’s study and accidentally invokes her wrath when he refers to her sacred manga (Sekimatsu Densetsu: MagicalDestroy) as a picture diary. Thrown out of the house and with no place else to go, Hayate is suddenly confronted by the yakuza members who wanted his blood. They take him down to the harbor, and Hayate fears the worst until an odd little hero appears to save him. Calling herself “Mask the Money”, she stops the mafia men in their tracks and apologizes to Hayate on behalf of Nagi. Thanks to her, now Hayate’s ¥156,804,000 debt is clear – that is, until he unwittingly insults her disguise and she demands he work for her to pay it all off.

Kad says…
There was a lot of momentum in the first episode for this one to continue on with, yet it did so perfectly. I have no problems with the few things that were changed during the transition from manga to anime, because it’s seamless enough that it feels just as natural. This episode is really what begins the love-to-anger-and-back-again correspondence of the relationship between Nagi and Hayate, and I don’t doubt those scenes will be executed just as well in the story to come.

MSZ says…
The second episode is well preformed and full of comedy, but we’re still not to the “combat-battle story” part yet, though that seems to finally be coming in the next episode. The animation and art stay strong in this episode, which is good considering animation sometimes dies in the second episode of an anime… The anime team proves they can do a good job with the changes they make, which is good because with this kind of series you’re more than likely going to get a lot of anime original episodes. I especially like the addition of Nagi fantasizing about Hayate, it’s a lot more funny when a girl does it because guys do it all the time in anime >.>. I’m liking Tanaka’s job on Maria more with every episode, her forcefulness on Hayate about what happened in the bath was hilarious. The next episode should prove to be interesting, I’m curious as to how Juurouta Kosugi will pull off Tama.

Taiyz says…
Unlike what Kad said, I didn’t really get a feel of momentum carrying on into this episode. We’re dealing with anime, not Physics!…And Hayate just kinda wakes up in some mysterious room and wanders a bit to get to the bath; it’s not as fast-paced but it just strengthens the surprise factor of seeing Maria at the other side of the room.
The highlights of the episode are definitely Klaus using the censor icon to cover up Maria’s copyright-infringing mouth, “***dam” and all. It’s clear that even though they air the show in a morning time slot, this certainly isn’t targeted just at kids and they’re gonna “fight the broadcast system” as Wakamoto said as episode one’s closing line. Of course, there’s also the rapid-fire 15 seconds of pirate anime references with Black Lagoon and One Piece taking the helm. There’s a bit of inconsistency and copyright protection by replacing Benny with…Ryu from Shaman King? No idea where that came from, because Benny wasn’t even Japanese. All in all, they really show you in this episode that they mean business. The comedy continues at the highest level and by now you KNOW that this will be a quality series.
